Dubai, UAE, May 2017 – Pharmaceutical frontrunner Mundipharma launched a series of initiatives in Q1 2017 to commemorate Glaucoma Awareness Week. Targeting the ophthalmology community across the Middle East and Africa, the campaign successfully promoted Glaucoma awareness and facilitated a positive impact on sufferers across the region.
Dr. Ashraf Allam, Regional Vice President of Mundipharma Middle East and Africa commented, “We continue to strive to reach out to communities across the region that are most affected by this debilitating condition. We are passionate about leading Glaucoma research and medication, and are grateful to have contributed to increasing awareness and rates of early detection, moving one step closer to the eradication of the disease
Studies have shown that the number of glaucoma patients worldwide is expected to increase to 76 million in 2020. Contributing factors include low levels of education, poor disease awareness, noncompliance and mismanagement of the condition.
With a growing eye care portfolio, Mundipharma partnered with governmental healthcare authorities and national entities to provide innovative therapeutic solutions in the most prevalent areas in the region.
Across the MEA region, the company contributed through various sponsorships:
- Platinum Sponsor of the Evolving Practice of Ophthalmology Middle East Conference (EPOMEC) 2017 held in Dubai, UAE
- Emirates Glaucoma Marathon held in Abu Dhabi, UAE; which was followed by a conference, a three day discourse on glaucoma awareness at local schools and yoga sessions
- MEA SHINE: Sight Innovation Experts held in Dubai, UAE
- Main sponsor of the Red Sea Ophthalmology Symposium in Jeddah, KSA, where they were awarded ‘Best Pharmaceutical Company’
- Gold sponsor of the Egyptian Society of Glaucoma Conference, as well as local Egypt based conferences
The campaign greatly focused on the African region, primarily targeting countries with high rates of glaucoma, including Morocco, Algeria and Nigeria. Further activities included frequent eye screenings, educational sessions and the distribution of educational pamphlets.
Mundipharma carried out the Glaucoma initiatives across hospitals and health centres, in collaboration with government and educational bodies, including the Moroccan Glaucoma Association, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Nigeria, Egypt Society of Ophthalmology, Saudi Ophthalmology Society, Emirates Ophthalmology Society and the Kuwait Ministry of Health.
